Digesting the World is the result of a correlation between two digestive modes: that of digesting the world, and in particular our saturated relationship with the media, and that of digesting a museum collection that has been building up for several decades.
In the midst of a media space dominated by excess, how do we digest the world? How can we put its information and its transformations into perspective and relate them to each other? Does information overload drive inventiveness, reaction and resistance? Or does it lead us towards intoxication, an ingestion that gradually narrows and paralyses our consciousness? The exhibition is also a curatorial gesture: the idea of creating an exhibition based on a museum collection. How can it be understood and digested? How can we take a stand through it? To express what? What does it say about past, present and future societies? It’s a question of conceiving an exhibition without ever withdrawing from reality in all its paradoxical aspects, both its harshness and its richness.
How can the works in the collection of the Musée Départemental d’Art Contemporain de la Haute-Vienne translate, evoke and express a digestion of the world that is both personal and collective?
Various issues are explored: the powerless body, an uncomfortable world, the end of utopias, the fall, muted and convulsive violence, stupefaction, resistance and the ability to act. Through them, bodies are placed at the centre of reflection. In this way, the works aim to make visible, perceptible and sensitive a flow fuelled by the paradoxes that structure our bewildered societies.
